Adele and I met at an academic workshop on "critical nutrition studies" about a decade ago. I was a PhD student in Communication and she was beginning her doctoral work in the same field. That's about where our commonalities ended. I was at the workshop to talk about veganism and animal rights. She was there to talk about meat and low carb diets. Our debates during the workshop continued through the evening - we sat across from each other at dinner and grappled on a host of food system and nutrition topics. Through it all, our conversations were challenging, respectful, and ultimately generative. We co-authored a paper in which we debated about the role of the US Dietary Guidelines and its impact on public knowledge of nutrition. In the years that followed, we had a number of conversations, both online and at academic engagements. I was never able to convince her and she was never able to convince me, but that wasn't really the point. I learned from her perspective and appreciated her sincere dedication. I like to think she thought the same about me. She will be missed.

Garrett -- she talked often of you and was very pleased that you wrote a paper together. She greatly appreciated your insights and that you were open-minded enough to reasonably debate an issue that generates considerable passion. She always had positive things to say about you. Thanks so much for the tribute.
