Pieces

This is a song about relationships (not ours) that fall apart because one party can’t reciprocate the efforts put in by the other party.  It’s a righteous anger song. Adele wrote the melody on Jakob’s keyboard. She stole it from “All the Young Dudes,” but it’s an artful theft. We wrote two bridges by mistake (we forgot we’d written the first, so we wrote another). Both were good, so we left them both in.

Turntable Graveyard live in the basement in 2016.

Lyrics

Going down for the last time

I’m not going anymore

You can change horses

But I’m swimming for shore

When you wash up

On the other side

I won’t be there waiting for a turning of the tide

I gave what I could

You took it all

Hands shaking

But you just kept on taking until you took it all

You let me fall

All to pieces

Smoke from the wreckage

I catch the breeze and fly away

I'm leaving you your mess

I'd love to help but I can't stay

I'm all in pieces

And I'm okay but I'm afraid

If you thought I'd make this easy

You'll learn the hard way

You know the price I paid to learn to say the secret spell

You thought you'd find someone to

Make me kiss and tell you

And set you free

Too bad the magic only works for me

Hammer in hand you try to leave the ground

One foot nailed to the floor

Looking down I watch you spin around

As I float I soar

I gave what I could

You took it all

Hands shaking

But you just kept on taking until you took it all

You let me fall

All to pieces
