I Will Wait

Adele decided she wanted to write a story song and came up with this gem, a classic theme with a poignant twist. It's another example of her gifts as a lyricist -- a visually and emotionally evocative short story told with very few words. She lifted the chorus structure from R.E.M.'s "At My Most Beautiful."

From the Great Big Gone Threadbare Heart CD.

Lyrics

I will

I will wait

I will wait for you

I will

Baby’s due in June

He ships out in May

She says it’s just so long and not goodbye

As they roll away

She stands alone outside

Through the open window he hears

She’s crying

I will

I will wait

I will wait for you

I will

Waiting for the light

Keeping sleep at bay

Shakes with each explosion in the dark

Half a world away

The beating of her heart

Goes still

Still her soft voice echoes near

She’s saying

I will

I will wait

I will wait for you

I will

Another, smaller face

Her eyes were just the same

A blanket bundled tight against the cold

As he steps off the train

He can’t help but feel old

Lifts her close and whispers in her ear

He’s crying

I will

I will wait

I will wait for you

I will

(Waiting for the gift of warm ground)

I will

(Waiting for the chill to lift)

I will

(Waiting for the stars to turn round)

I will
